Are There Different Kinds of Dental Implants?

Yes! There are many kinds of dental implants. A dental implant is like the root of a tooth.  It is placed in the jaw bone under the gum tissue in order to support a crown for a missing tooth or teeth or to provide support for full or partial dentures. For 1 – 4 missing teeth, one dental implant per tooth may be the recommended treatment although a dental bridge can be constructed over dental implants.

Dental implants have been placed in the positions of the central and lateral incisor. There is significant loss of bone and tissue.

The benefits of dental implants include:

  • Improved occlusion and function
  • Implant treatment can be comfortable as growing a new tooth would be if this was possible.  We often call dental implants and crowns to replace missing teeth ‘bionic teeth’!
  • Enhanced aesthetics and comfort
  • Implant crowns can prevent the need to crown your natural teeth
  • Dental implants can be used in areas where conventional bridgework is not possible

Dental implants used to support full or partial dentures will help you to feel more confident and comfortable as your denture feels more secure.  There is often reduced bulk of your denture and improved taste perception due to minimizing palatal coverage.

Smoking reduces the success rate of dental implants and adds just another reason to eliminate this habit. Maintenance of dental implants is as simple as
