I am so glad that you asked! Taking care of your dental implant is important.  Your implant crown will never decay, but you can get gum disease and periodontal disease around your implant!  This could result in the loss of your implant and may result in a significant bony defect where the implant used to be.

To start with, you really take care of your implant crown the same way that you would take care of a tooth you want to keep healthy forever.  There are some differences simply because the implant and crown may accumulate debris differently than a natural tooth. A Water Pik can be very useful to clean below the implant crown.  However, you can take care of your implant and implant crown with a toothbrush and floss, just like a natural tooth!  Your dentist and dental hygienist should show you how to take care of your new implant crown, bridge, or appliance!  Please ask us if you have questions!

I would like to share some good implant information from a great company:

Implants to replace missing front teeth have been very successful!

  • Successful implant treatment should be based on a healthy dentition
  • Implants require just as much care as natural teeth when it comes to oral hygiene
  • Teeth are often lost due to problems with oral hygiene or trauma – the same bad habits can also harm a dental implant and crown!
