What is BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?
Repeated contraction of facial muscles cause wrinkles to appear in the skin which become more persistent and noticeable with age. These wrinkles commonly show up as “11’s” between the eyebrows (glabella), forehead wrinkles, and “crows’ feet” around the corners of the eyes. BOTOX Cosmetic is a natural, purified protein that relaxes muscles to create a more youthful appearance. BOTOX Cosmetic is injected with a tiny needle just below the skin to stop the contraction of muscles, which creates a smoother, more relaxed look. The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic wear off naturally but generally last 3 to 4 months.
Forehead wrinkles accentuated with brow lift, but are still present in the relaxed face
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic is a brand name used by Allergan® for a large molecular complex derived from botulinum toxin that acts on nerves to prevent the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACH). ACH acts between the nerve and the muscle to make the muscle contract. By blocking the message from the nerve to the muscle, the muscle relaxes to create smoother skin. Dysport® and Xeomin® are other brand names for the molecular complex derived from the botulinum toxin.
What Happens During BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?
Your first appointment will include taking photos, a consultation to clarify desired results and prepare a cost estimate, and the actual treatment if you are ready to proceed. BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is easy—no anesthetic is needed—but we will use ice to slightly numb the surface. There is a very small pinch because we use the same fine, pain-free needle that diabetics use. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes.
Results begin to appear after 3-5 days, but it may take up to 14 days to see the full results. Side-effects are rare and not permanent and include tenderness, small bruising, short term headache, or drooping of the brow.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Safe?
BOTOX Cosmetic treatment has been thoroughly researched for over 29 years and is approved by the FDA. More than 15 million procedures have been performed since 2002.
What Will My Face Look Like After BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?
Over the next few days after your treatment, you will notice a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles in the treated areas. As the skin smooths out, you will look more awake and have a more youthful appearance as existing wrinkles become less noticeable.
How Much Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Cost?
The cost of BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is based on the number of units of BOTOX used, times the fee of $11.50 per unit. The number of units used is based on the depth and number of wrinkles, as well as the size of the area treated. Treating just “crow’s feet” around the eyes is usually 6 to 10 units per eye, for a total fee in the range of $138 to $230. Treating the “11’s” and forehead wrinkles can range from 48 to 58 units for women and 58 to 68 units for men, for a total fee in the range of $552 to $667 for women and $667 to $782 for men.
Retreatment within four months of the initial treatment drops the price to $10.00 per unit.
