Dental fluorosis is a developmental disturbance in the enamel caused by extremely high concentrated levels of fluoride while the teeth are developing.

Overexposure of fluoride between the ages of 1-4 is the most critical period. Once the teeth erupt into place they are no longer at risk for fluorosis, this is generally around age 8. Fluorosis usually affects permanent teeth but occasionally the primary teeth may be involved as well. Fluorosis is found to be more prevalent in rural areas where drinking water is derived from shallow wells, but can also occur in areas where drinking water has fluoride content greater than 1 ppm, also in children with poor calcium intake.

Mild fluorosis appears as barely noticeable white spots or white streaks in the tooth’s enamel. These spots or blotches become more noticeable in cases of moderate fluorosis and they are especially noticeable as the teeth become dry as may happen during exercise or any prolonged period of mouth breathing.
In severe cases dental fluorosis causes the teeth to have discoloration often described as brown staining. You may even notice that the enamel may be pitted, rough, & may darken over time.
