Not many people think ‘fun’ when they think of dentistry or dental treatment. We do a couple fun things – we really do – in our office. One of those things is Tooth Sparkles or Smile Gems!

What is a Tooth Sparkle or Smile Gem?
A Tooth Sparkle is also called a Smile Gem in our office. We use delicate and beautiful Swarovski crystals and bond them to the surface of a tooth in a similar fashion that an orthodontist might use to bond an orthodontic bracket to the surface of a tooth. These smile gems or tooth sparkles come in clear which looks like a diamond and assorted colors including blues, pinks, reds, purples, and iridescent which appears to have many colors depending on the light. In our office we have 2mm and 3mm size tooth sparkles or smile gems on hand. We can even bond tooth sparkles or smile gems to denture teeth, however in this case the denture tooth would have a tiny preparation to hold the tooth sparkle in place.
Are there other options to decorate a tooth?
In our office we also have a variety of tiny gold pieces in various shapes that can also be bonded to a tooth. Some of these even have crystals within the gold piece. If a patient has a particular design in mind, it can probably be fabricated!
Do tooth sparkles or smile gems hurt the tooth?
Since the Swarovski crystal or gold piece is bonded to the surface of a tooth there is no permanent damage to the tooth. The crystal can be easily removed and the tooth polished just as when orthodontic brackets are removed from the surface of a tooth. The tooth sparkle or smile gem may come off on its own while eating and they are not meant to last a long time. Just a temporary, inexpensive bit of fun!
